Who is a travel mug for?
Before digging into the review let’s talk about who this article is meant for. Initially, I wanted to collect all the thermoses, tumblers, insulated bottles, and water bottles (no, not really) that could keep your coffee piping hot for hours on end. In the end, it turned out that sometimes these kind of mugs and travel mugs are more or less the same thing. I’ve written about effective ways of how to keep your coffee hot here already, but I decided to dedicate one whole article to the best mugs to keep coffee hot.
Now, if you’re one of the people that commute, work outside your house, travel on a regular basis because they choose so, if you love road trips, take long train rides, or simply want to keep and enjoy your warm beverages for longer, you may want to invest in a coffee travel mug.
And there are a few great reasons as to why should you:
- Eco-friendly and healthier (unlike the Styrofoam to-go cups or endless piles of plastic/paper cups from the local coffee shop. Because we can easily reduce those 50 billion paper cups that we throw away every year, can’t we?)
- Economical (save money by making your own delicious lattes, fragrant black coffee, and…well, tea, anyone?)
- Practical (travel mugs are spill or leak-safe, insulated, and built with a purpose to retain the heat of the beverage. You may love your cute Monday Morning ceramic cup, but let’s face it; that thing isn’t leaving your apartment anytime soon, is it?)
What is the best mug to keep coffee hot?
Well, there is some tough competition out there I tell you. Some may say that a vacuum mug is the best way to keep your coffee hot, but when reviewing the products listed below, I’ve taken into consideration the following criteria:
- Is the mug vacuum-insulated?
- What’s the real heat retention?
- Stainless steel or plastic?
- Is it leak- and spill proof?
- How easy is it to use?
- The size matters (for some)!
After thorough and extensive research, I’ve come up with the winner. The best travel coffee mug is NiftyCore Bamboo Tumbler. I love that it keeps coffee hot for hours, the mesh strainer is flawless, and the tumbler is extremely durable and free of any nasty petrochemicals. It’s solid, good quality product that will surely serve you well easily. The only downside is its small size; it’s only available in 14 oz.
Now, a second runner up, if you’re looking for something more appropriate for your budget, I’d recommend Contigo Autoseal Mug. It’s completely leak-proof and I’ve loved it for that since I’m quite a klutz! Stainless steel, durable, and delivers all that it promises to do, including keeping your coffee hot up to 5 hours. The paint of the colored ones comes off if you put it in the dishwasher, but you can easily wash it by hand instead!

I know that we all want the perfect mug that will keep our coffee hot for as long as it possibly can. Now, if you try to get as much coffee in you in the shortest time possible, this list is probably not too interesting. You can easily find a less expensive mug and stick to that.
However, if you have a long commute, tend to travel with your coffee mug and require the beverage to be hot at all times, I invite you to have a look at the list below. Yes, it can keep coffee warm up to 6 hours. The product works great until it doesn’t. The lid is prone to breaking and it’s happened more than once; the general idea is that the product is made in China and its quality has decreased over the years. It may be the best thermos out there. It may not!

- One size available
- The lid is hard to remove
- Narrow straw
This tumbler looks better than it works. Yes, it comes with a number of features and benefits, but it’s prone to leaking; moving it anywhere may result in spilling your drink. While it looks super stylish, it doesn’t actually hold 30 oz., so there’s some false advertisement involved.
Other best travel coffee mug options
Since it was quite a pain to make the list of only 10 best coffee mugs to keep coffee hot, I’ve decided to extend it a bit and include the interestingly well-made but a bit pricier competitors to all the rest on the upper list.

This thermos comes with a strainer as well, which makes it very appropriate and handy for any potential tea lovers out there (but then you’re shopping for coffee mugs, right? Feel free to ignore my remark on tea. Who needs it, anyway?). Oh, and if you’re eco-friendly and all about the sustainable, this is the cup for you. After all, it’s bamboo!
Best coffee mugs to keep coffee hot: a recap
The choices are endless when it comes to travel coffee mugs. The trick is to choose the one that will suit you the best. Whether you make coffee with French Press, Moka pot, or one of budget coffee machines, coffee should stay hot! But, there’s more to a travel mug than just keeping your coffee hot; one of the main reasons I bought my first one was because I wanted to cut down expenses (and because it looked very cute. Sue me!). So I landed one of these and never looked back. Being environmentally friendly when buying one of these travel mugs is just a bonus that will surely convince the more stubborn among you.
Anyway, the general trick to keep your coffee hot for longer is a vacuum-insulated mug. The majority of people will tell you that those are the masters of doing the piping hot magic with your coffee. The second trick to consider is to limit the amount of time you expose coffee to cool air.
Keep the lid shut, get a good-quality mug, and you can forget all about an unpleasantly cold cup of coffee!
Safe travels and may hot coffee be with you!
